COSON MEMBERS SHARE 200 MILLION NAIRA IN RECORD ROYALTY DISTRIBUTION AS THE CMO ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF THE MULTI-MILLION NAIRA COSON HOUSE

Members of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) this Thursday, December 15, 2016, approved the distribution of a record N200 million naira in copyright royalties to members and affiliates as proposed by the Board of the society which collects royalties for the use musical works and sound recordings in Nigeria. The unanimous approval of the proposed distribution took place at the Extra-Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) of COSON held at Niteshift Coliseum, Opebi, Ikeja.

In an outstanding display of coordinated technological efficiency, immediately after the approval, several members of COSON at the venue confirmed that shortly after the approval, they received alerts from their banks confirming that their royalties had just been paid.

For the Extra Ordinary General Meeting, the gaily dressed musicians, young and old from across the country thronged Niteshift Coliseum in a celebratory mood. There was so much singing and dancing as several musicians performed at the event, turning the general meeting into a carnival.

In his address which was punctuated by intermittent applause, COSON Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji thanked the members for their continuous support of the society since its inception. Said Okoroji “Despite what is a very hostile environment under which your society has had to operate and an economy hit by severe recession and despite the acquisition of the multi-million Naira ‘COSON House’ which is fully paid for, your Board is today putting before you a scheme for the distribution of a record sum of N200,000,000.00 (Two Hundred Million Naira), a 42.86% increase on the sum of N140,000,000.00 (One Hundred & Forty Million Naira) which you approved for distribution last year”. The information was received with huge applause and unprecedented celebration.
Reporting on the acquisition of the new COSON property, Chief Okoroji said, “I am pleased to announce to you today that in keeping with your mandate, your society has acquired and fully paid for a big multi-million Naira property at No 41 Oluwaleyemu Street, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja. When fully renovated, the property to be known as “COSON HOUSE” will have state of the art facilities for the operation of any modern organization and provide sufficient accommodation for our growing work force. It is our hope that by time the next AGM takes place, we would have moved from Omodara Street to COSON HOUSE".
Commenting further, the Chairman said, “I want to congratulate every member of COSON for this historic achievement not made by any organization in the creative industry before now. Let me remind you that none of us can truly say anymore that he or she is not a landlord because we are all owners of COSON HOUSE”
Chief Okoroji reported on many initiatives undertaken by his Board to increase the fortunes of the creative industry in Nigeria and boost the Nigerian economy. On the private copy levy scheme, he said that with the firm promises made to a recent COSON delegation by the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and the visible steps he has taken since the meeting, he is satisfied that finally, the activation of the private copy levy scheme is receiving appropriate attention.
On the dispute with the telecommunication companies, Okoroji said “While we have sought judicial intervention in specific cases, we also went to Abuja to seek administrative intervention at the highest level to ensure that going forward, all contributors to the pie get their appropriate share of the pie and that the interaction between the telecommunication industry and the creative industry positively affects the Nigeria economy. In Abuja, we received unequivocal assurance from the Honourable Minister of Communications that he will personally address the issues with dispatch”.

Speaking on the royalty agreement with the broadcast industry, the COSON Chair said, “Whilst we cannot undervalue the importance of our agreement with the broadcast industry. I wish to report that from the COSON/BON/IBAN/NBC/NCC Agreement, the broadcast industry owes COSON a significant amount of money, money which should be available for distribution to our members and affiliates.

“This is one of the issues our delegation took to Abuja last month. You must have heard that the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, has forcefully called on all broadcasting stations operating in Nigeria to honour the copyright royalty agreement they entered with COSON in 2014”.

Concluding, the celebrated former President of PMAN said, “This same COSON which was given no chance six years ago, today has reciprocal representation agreements with other CMOs covering about 140 countries and territories in every continent ensuring that Nigerian music is protected around the world.
“As you well know, COSON has collected and distributed several hundreds of millions of naira to right owners across Nigeria. You can bear witness to the fact that without stories and without excuses, COSON has paid royalties every year since inception.
“Fellow members of COSON, it is not yet El Dorado and there is still a lot of work to do but I say to you, when someone says to you, ‘nothing works in Nigeria’ please shake your head and say to the person, ‘COSON is working!’’’

INFORMATION MINISTER ASKS BROADCAST STATIONS ACROSS NIGERIA TO RESPECT COPYRIGHT AGREEMENT WITH COSON

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed, has called on all broadcasting stations operating in Nigeria to honour the copyright royalty agreement they entered into with Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) through the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON) and Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN) in 2014.

The Minister made the call at the Headquarters of his ministry in Abuja on Thursday, November 24, 2016 when he met with a high-powered delegation of COSON led by the Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji. The minister reiterated the need for a national change in perception saying that the creative industries in Nigeria have the potentials to form the bedrock of a new Nigerian economy.
Present at the meeting were all the heads of the Federal Government owned broadcasting agencies including the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mallam Ishaq Modibbo Kawu; the Director-General of Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Mr. Yakubu Mohammed and the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Dr. Mansur Liman. All Senior Assistants of the minister were also present at the meeting.
Addressing the minister, a very passionate Chief Okoroji said that his delegation was not in Abuja for photo opportunities with government officials but to seriously engage the government in order that the significant potentials of Nigeria’s creative industries are released for better job opportunities, investments and growth in the Nigerian economy at a time when the nation faces serious challenges.

The COSON Chairman made several specific requests which he said are easily actionable and should produce quick and quantifiable results for the nation. The requests include the following:

  • The Federal Government should ensure the full implementation of the Private Copy Levy scheme without any further delay.
  • The Federal Government should make it very clear to all telecommunications companies operating in Nigeria that henceforth, there will be zero tolerance for the infringement of the Intellectual Property rights of Nigerian citizens whose works are deployed by these companies.
  • All Federal and State owned broadcasting stations and other government institutions must respect the intellectual property rights of citizens as there is no provision under the law that exempts them from the infringement of copyright with respect to the content broadcast or deployed by them.
  • The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) should be requested as a matter of urgency to take necessary steps to begin the take down of the several pirate websites bastardizing and frittering away Nigerian Intellectual Property on the Internet.
  • The Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ought to be requested to act swiftly to ensure that the brazen and massive piracy of Nigerian music, movies and literature across our continent is no longer tolerated.
  • The Nigerian Copyright Commission should be given new vigour and empowered to pivot towards the effective implementation of anti-piracy measures in the digital environment as the nature of piracy has changed.
  • The National Assembly should be made to act with dispatch to ensure the promulgation into law of the new Copyright Bill which contains several provisions dealing with emerging issues and the infringement of copyright in the digital era.
  • Necessary action should be taken to get the National Endowment Fund for the Arts up and running so that there are resources to take care of funding for creative projects and the welfare of creative people who have fallen into hard times.
It was agreed at the meeting that a working group comprising officials of the ministry, COSON and other agencies of government would be set up without delay to address the issues raised at the meeting.

COMUNICATION MINISTER PROMISES PERSONAL COMMITMENT TO RESOLVING COPYRIGHT DISPUTE BETWEEN COSON AND THE TELECOMMUNICATION INDUSTRY

Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu has pledged that he would personally resolve the burning copyright dispute between Nigeria’s telecommunication companies and the music industry represented by Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON).
The Minister made the pledge in his Abuja office on Thursday, November 24, 2016 whilst speaking with a delegation of COSON led by the Chairman, Chief Tony Okoroji.
Barrister Shittu said that Nigeria can no longer tolerate a situation where some people are milking the cow while the owners are left high and dry.
He also said that the unfair exploitation of the Intellectual Property of Nigeria’s creative talents is nothing short of robbery.
Addressing the minister, Chief Okoroji said that the Nigerian economy cannot make much progress if we do not understand that the nature of the world economy has changed and that our country must pay the right attention to the respect for intellectual property.
He said that when the telecommunications companies operating in Nigeria were licensed, no one could have predicted that they would so quickly become important distributors of content and intellectual property.
According to him, these companies which were initially licensed to carry ‘voice’ have evolved to become the major distributors of music and movies in a completely unregulated atmosphere.
He said that serious issues of Intellectual Property abuse have arisen from this development resulting in several ongoing court cases. Predicting that if these issues were not quickly resolved, many more cases will end up in the courts making the environment for the operations of the telecom companies turbulent. The minister assured the delegation that the government will treat the matter with utmost dispatch.
On the delegation to the Minister were juju maestro Sir Shina Peters, rub-a-dub master Ras Kimono, gospel star Kenny Saint Best and queen of love, Azeezat Allen. Also on the delegation were COSON General Manager, Mr. Chinedu Chukwuji and COSON Public Affairs Consultant, Mrs. Lucy Ajayi.
